Commonwealth Golf Club

4-PLUS: Must play course - excellent standard; worthy of 4½ stars.

Est. 1915

Commonwealth Golf Club is home to one of the top-rated courses on Melbourne's golf-laden "sandbelt". This attractive and renowned layout, possesses almost garden-like qualities, such is the variety of trees and bushes, large and small. But Commonwealth is much more than a delightful walk in the park. From a golfing standpoint, it also has everything one needs for an enjoyably testing round.

Commonwealth's park-like credentials are enhanced by a small and very natural lake coming into play on the 3rd and 16th holes. Meanwhile, helpful plaques provide the names of many of the tree types around the course ("eucalyptus citriodora", the lemon scented gum tree being one of our favourites).

On this excellent layout, most of the layout's trouble and hazards are clear enough to see from the tee. Top-quality greens and bunkering, and good-width flattish fairways should keep your game moving along nicely. However, with many towering tree species to marvel at, and abundant exotic birds residing in them, concentrating fully on your golf may be a test in itself.

Did you know?

Commonwealth's origins can be traced back to 1915, when a group of 11 golf enthusiasts formed the Murrumbeena Golf Club. The name was changed to Waverley Golf Club before a new constitution established the club as the Commonwealth Golf Club in 1920 and a new location was selected, just south of the Metropolitan Golf Club. Since those early days, Commonwealth has hosted a number of top national and regional tournaments, including the Australian Open championship in 1967.
