The National Golf Club (Gunnamatta course)

4-PLUS: Must play course - excellent standard; worthy of 4½ stars.

Est. 2000

The National Golf Club (Gunnamatta course; formerly Ocean course): No longer overshadowed by the Old and Moonah courses here at The National, the Peter Thomson designed and seriously Tom Doak revamped Gunnamatta course now proudly stands alongside its siblings. A belter of a links course, not to be missed.

The expansive and undulating terrain provides a fabulous setting for this open links course. The first tee provides wonderful views onto the Bass Strait, views that return later in the round, most notably on the closing stretch.

The Gunnamatta course's winding, rolling fairways lead you to excellent greens, many of which have run-offs and tight mown surrounds, rather than the more usual threat of deep bunkering. Bunkers do however feature strongly on the layout, cutting across and into many of the fairways, and having a visually narrowing effect, as you eye up the "challenge" from the tee.
