The National Golf Club (Old course)

4-star: Above average course - well worth a visit.

Est. 1988

The National Golf Club (Old course): The much acclaimed Old course was the first of The National's impressive triumvirate of championship courses to be built on the Mornington Peninsula. Immensely scenic vistas onto the Bass Strait and surrounding countryside greet you on the first tee at one of Melbourne's most dramatic, natural and scenic golf courses. These stunning views keep returning during your round.

The holes here are individually crafted in an undulating woodland environment, very different from the open, rolling, links character of its siblings ... the Ocean and Moonah courses. Contrasting as the siblings maybe, the Old course has a slightly older "twin" (by two years), located immediately to the east ... the also Robert Trent Jones Jnr designed layout of the Cape Schanck Resort.

Three of the four par-3s can rightly be described as world class. Some of the huge greens have slopes and ridges that are distinctly Himalayan, and a few of the fairway gradients (especially on the front-nine) might be graded as black runs if located in a ski resort.

The National's Old course lays down a hugely entertaining and at times very demanding challenge, with the undulating terrain throwing up many elevated tees and greens. If dramatic scenery and challenging golf is your cup of tea, then this immaculately maintained and ever popular course is for you.
