Kaikoura Golf Club

3-star: Good course – an enjoyable test for your game.

Est. 1911

Kaikoura Golf Club: Tall pines and some newer plantings line many of the fairways on this easy-going, well-maintained and relatively uncomplicated golf course just outside the popular holiday town of Kaikoura. The Kaikoura Range of mountains stand proudly in the background, State Highway 1 flanks one side of the course and the sound of the sea is never far away.

Without too much bunkering to worry about and limited undulations in the terrain, your concentration can focus on staying within the fairway "tree-line" (the trees are reasonably well-spaced). Hitting the small, firm greens also needs to be mastered, especially if you plan to "get down in two".

With less than 5,600 metres to cover from the men's tees, accuracy should give way to length in your course management and game strategy. The final hole is a short par-3, played from an elevated tee-box to a green encircled by bunkers front, back and sides.

Did you know?

Just a few kilometres off the coast of Kaikoura is the Kaikoura Canyon, an incredibly deep ocean trench, which creates a perfect feeding habitat for many ocean mammals such as whales, dolphins and seals. Kaikoura has responded by becoming one of the best places in New Zealand to watch (and swim with) these wonderful sea animals.

Kaikoura's Whale Watch experience is well organised in a fleet of impressive, state-of-the-art boats. Swimming with dolphins and seals is also well catered for, but book early, these activities are very popular.
