Methven Golf Club

3-PLUS: Good course - several memorable features; worthy of 3½ stars.

Est. 1924

Methven Golf Club: As one might expect in this popular wintertime ski location, there are many fine mountain views from the golf course. When that is, you are not up against, or under, the many trees that line the fairways.

This is a very pleasant parkland course, quite flat except for one or two dips and slopes on a few holes. The many varieties of trees, which include poplars, birch, eucalyptus, willows and even English oak, do a fine job of defining the often tightish fairways, although on occasions newer tree planting is starting to make things unnecessarily tight (as at the par-5 3rd). Thankfully, the back-nine feels a tad more open and forgiving than the front.

With several short par-4s and not overly long par-5s, this is a course where keeping the driver in the bag and using something more accurate from the tee may pay handsome dividends on your scorecard. The small greens are, like the rest of the course, very well maintained and a pleasure to putt on.
