Mount Maunganui Golf Club

3-PLUS: Good course - several memorable features; worthy of 3½ stars.

Est. 1935

Mount Maunganui Golf Club: "The Mount" as this excellently maintained parkland course is often called, comprises three very attractive six-hole loops. There is a certain uniformity in the design, with each of the loops heading east for three holes, before turning back with three westerly-facing holes that return you to the modern and impressive clubhouse. This uniformity does not however imply monotony - far from it.

The lightly tree-lined fairways, excellent bunkering and well-paced greens ensure that you are suitably absorbed and tested with each hole in turn. Views onto Mount Manganui itself and the layout's pleasant parkland character reinforce the golfing treat that awaits here.

The terrain is gently undulating in parts, flatter in others, and blends a good mix of stout fir trees with one or two more open aspects.

The width of the fairways nicely balances the need for straight hitting from the tee, but not so as to deter frequent use of the driver. The opening loop, with several shortish holes, is where you should try to build a good early score - things get decidely more difficult after the opening stretch.
