De Oosterhoutse Golf Club

3-PLUS: Good course - several memorable features; worthy of 3½ stars.

Est. 1985

De Oosterhoutse Golf Club is home to a pleasant parkland layout that dates (as many of the newer Dutch and Belgian courses do), from the mid-1980s. Tucked away behind its tree-lined perimeter, the relatively flat terrain was subject to a minimal amount of earth-moving. The result is a flattish course without much elevation change and limited undulation.

Tree-lined fairways and occasional ponds demand good course management and shot-making at Oosterhoutse, with out-of-bounds also a factor on several holes on both nine-hole loops. There's a few tightish tee shots to make, especially at the dog-legging par-4 14th and 16th holes.

The flat terrain may not create a dramatically scenic environment, but the solid layout, good-width fairways and much tree-planting (of 15-20 years ago) all gels to create a course that holds your interest through the front-nine and into the stronger back-nine.

The greens are large and sloping, and generally well bunkered to the sides. In front of the greens the approach "aprons" are excellently maintained, creating plenty of bump-and-run possibilities.

The neighbouring town to the golf course is Oosterhout, which sits on a bend in the Wilhelmina Canal. In distinct contrast to the town's rather modern architecture, parts of the impressive basilica of St John the Baptist (Basiliek Sint-Jan-de-Doper) date back to 1473. Building the church's imposing tower started in 1519.
