Golf de Sablé-Solesmes

4-star: Above average course - well worth a visit.

Est. 1991

Golf de Sablé-Solesmes: Located on the route from Paris to the famous châteaux of the Loire valley, Sablé-Solesmes is laid out in three distinctive and excellent nine-hole loops. These 27-holes ensure that variety is not in short supply.

La Forêt (Forest) is a nine-hole loop offering a classic parkland golfing environment, with partly-open and partly tree-lined holes. The flattish terrain, which skirts alongside the Forêt de Pincé, has been pleasantly landscaped and laced with a few testing water hazards, especially in its middle section.

If you prefer even more water, you'll be at home on the scenic and more undulating Rivière-nine (River). Here you will need to navigate water hazards on five of the nine holes, while also enjoying views onto open countryside and playing a few holes alongside the wonderful River Sarthe. A bit of TGV train-spotting might also feature. At the par-3 12th (Rivière's third hole) there is a virtual island green, surrounded on three sides by a pond.

For something more open and links-like, the Cascade-nine (Waterfall) combines elements of each of the other nines, while also presenting a more rugged "Scottish" feel. Whichever combination you play, you'll enjoy the quality and fairness of Michel Gayon's layout, as well as excellent green-keeping and overall presentation. There are too many good holes to even start to list them. Just make sure you allow time in your travels to drop in on the Sarthe River valley and this excellent golf course.

The Masters: The 88th Masters Tournament at Augusta National sees LIV golfer Jon Rahm defend his title against the world’s best. Pressing hard will be world No.1 and 2022 champion Scottie Scheffler and world No.2 Rory McIlroy (April 11-14).

Chevron Championship: the women’s major championship season gets underway for the second year at its new Carlton Woods home outside Houston, Texas. World No.2 Lilia Vu defends (April 18-21).

Who's Who

Nelly Korda: records a perfect start to 2024 with four wins out of her last four appearances on the LPGA Tour, a feat last achieved by Lorena Ochoa in 2008. Korda's win at the T-Mobile Match Play brought up her 12th LPGA Tour victory.

Scottie Scheffler: narrowly missed out on matching Nelly Korda’s three-in-three, when he placed second at the Houston Open. This followed back-to-back wins at the Arnold Palmer Invitational and The Players. Like Korda, he remains comfortably ahead in the official world golf rankings.
