Nairn Dunbar Golf Club

4-star: Above average course - well worth a visit.

Est. 1899

Nairn Dunbar Golf Club: Perhaps overshadowed by the "other" Nairn golf course (on the west side of town), Nairn Dunbar lies to the east of town across the River Nairn. Here on flattish terrain bordering the Culbin Forest and Culbin Sands, you'll find another in Scotland's long line of great links golf courses. The layout may lack the beach hugging location, sea views and greater undulations of its more renowned neighbour, but Nairn Dunbar does possess all the essential ingredients of a thoroughly absorbing links layout.

The terrain is generally quite flat, with a couple of exceptions on the front-nine where the greens are more elevated. Gorse bushes, small birch trees, willows, sallows and dastardly ditches line many of the fairways. Wayward hitting will meet with potentially penal consequences, but on most occasions there's enough room to encourage confident use of the big-timber from the tee.

The greens at Nairn Dunbar are firm and fast, and particularly on the par-3s are heavily guarded by excellent revetted bunkering. The picturesque par-3 8th (Brodie) is an excellent case in point. This thoroughly enjoyable links course is well worth having on your play-list when you visit the bustling coastal town of Nairn.

Did you know?

On May 24, 1899 the first shot was struck on Nairn's new links course by Sir Alexander Dunbar of Boath. Sir Alex, had given both his name and sixty acres of land to create a second course in Nairn, "where the working men and women of the town could enjoy the Royal and Ancient game".

Nairn Dunbar is the home club of Russell Knox, a multiple winner on the European Tour and PGA Tour.
