From Dublin follow the M4 and after Kinnegad the N6, direction Galway. 14 km east of Athlone in the village of Moate, turn right and follow the signs to Mount Temple.
Mount Temple Golf Club: When the Dolan family decided to transform part of their pleasantly undulating farmland into a championship golf course, they wanted above all to retain the splendid naturalness of the rural environment.
The 250 year-old farm buildings were converted into a charming golf clubhouse. The grass was cut to appropriate lengths in the surrounding fields (without any artificial mounding or earthmoving) and within six months the course was ready for play. To the surprise of some and expectation of others, the layout created is full of good golf holes, presenting an enjoyable golfing test that is both fair and challenging.
Light rough separates the fairways, making ball finding relatively easy, while trees and water are not overly in play on the relatively open terrain. Even the greens follow the god-given contours of the land, creating a few serious putting challenges, not least at the par-4 13th.
Although blessed with lovely views across the midlands countryside, and usually a good breeze blowing around the course, this is not going to be a contender for future Irish Ryder Cup bids, but as a very natural and scenic layout, Mount Temple has plenty to offer handicappers of all levels.
Visitors welcome on weekdays and weekends.
Must book in advance.
Soft spikes only. Players generally walk this course.

The Masters: The 88th Masters Tournament at Augusta National sees LIV golfer Jon Rahm defend his title against the world’s best. Pressing hard will be world No.1 and 2022 champion Scottie Scheffler and world No.2 Rory McIlroy (April 11-14).
Chevron Championship: the women’s major championship season gets underway for the second year at its new Carlton Woods home outside Houston, Texas. World No.2 Lilia Vu defends (April 18-21).
Nelly Korda: records a perfect start to 2024 with four wins out of her last four appearances on the LPGA Tour, a feat last achieved by Lorena Ochoa in 2008. Korda's win at the T-Mobile Match Play brought up her 12th LPGA Tour victory.
Scottie Scheffler: narrowly missed out on matching Nelly Korda’s three-in-three, when he placed second at the Houston Open. This followed back-to-back wins at the Arnold Palmer Invitational and The Players. Like Korda, he remains comfortably ahead in the official world golf rankings.
Marco Simone Golf & Country Club: With a clubhouse that might befit a Roman Emperor, and a golf course to match, you can be sure of a memorable outing at Rome's most talked about golf facility.
Jim Fazio's original layout was much changed to create a modern Ryder Cup course ... now one of the Eternal City's (and Italy's) most revered.
