Awali Golf Club

2-star: Reasonably okay course - if better courses not available.

Awali Golf Club: While you're in Bahrain, why not try a round of golf on the Gulf's oldest sand course, and sample golf as it was originally played in the desert. Awali Golf Club is located very close to the Royal Golf Club, Bahrain's only championship grass golf course.

Here at Awali the entire game is played on sand, and that means fairways, greens (known as browns) and obviously the bunkers. Although not as easy on the eye as a grass course, there are many very well laid out holes on this 6589 yard, par-70 layout.

The large and sloping browns roll as straight, fast and true as anything you'll find on a grass course. Sand golf may not be to everyone's liking, but it is remarkable how close to grass golf it comes - what's missing are all those lush green fairways.

Other information

The etiquette of sand golf requires the following: only wear flat-soled shoes (e.g. trainers). Spiked shoes, including soft spikes are not permitted as they damage the greens (called browns). An artificial grass mat is used when playing from a fairway (marked by oiled lines). The browns must be brushed after putting out, large brushes are provided for this purpose.

Did you know?

The desert course at Awali Golf Club is the oldest golf club in the Arabian Gulf area and probably the oldest in the Middle East. Golf was brought to this region by oilfield workers in the 1930s.

A three-hole course was created next to the first oil well in Jebel Al Dukan, prior to the establishment of a nine-hole course in the hill area of Awali. The forerunner of the current course was laid out in the late 1930s, with the Golf Club being recognised as an official sports facility in 1952.
