5 miles S of Pinehurst Traffic Circle
From the Pinehurst traffic circle (intersection of the US-15-501, 211 and 2) follow the 2-West direction Pinehurst. After 1.4 miles, at traffic lights, turn left onto Hwy 5 direction Aberdeen. After 3.5 miles turn left into The Pit Golf Links. Follow road for o.6 miles to golf parking.
Pit Golf Links
The Pit Golf Links: GOLF COURSE CLOSED IN 2010, and was subsequently bought and redeveloped by the Pinehurst Resort. It has now become their No.10 course, with a completely new design by Tom Doak, which opened for play in 2024.
[Original Where2Golf description of "The Pit"]: Sometimes confused for a Mike Stranz design (see our "Tobacco Road" course details), it was in fact Dan Maples who discovered this former sand and gravel quarry. He transformed it into one of the Sandhills' most arresting and challenging golf courses.
The front-nine is not so different from many other quality layouts in the area. A very natural and enjoyable out-and-back loop through well-spaced, tall pine trees, characterised by tightish and pleasantly undulating fairways. The par-3 4th is a terrific short hole played from an elevated tee; terrific becomes terrifying if attempted from the 229 yard back-tee.
Having enjoyed the waterless front-nine, get ready for something very different on the back, which is played through an area that was heavily quarried. A good-sized lake first comes into play at the dog-legging par-4 11th, again at the wonderful island green par-3 12th, and finally at the par-4 13th, requiring a tee-shot over water to reach the safety of the fairway. Don't think your departure from the lake signals an easier time ahead.
The closing stretch contains several tight holes, with thick vegetation lining the fairways - not even enough room for bunkers. The very challenging par-5 15th (one of Pinehurst's toughest holes) is played from elevated tees onto a pencil-thin fairway that continues to narrow all the way to the small, well-protected green.
The 18th brings you back out to a relatively open area in front of the clubhouse, where you can reflect on your round in "the Pit" - a very natural domain that combines easier going pine forest, a great lakeside stretch and a challenging, tightly wooded finish.

Following its closure in 2010, The Pit Golf Links was later bought by the Pinehurst Resort. The course eventually reopened in 2024, having been subject to a complete redesign and rebuild by renowned golf architect Tom Doak.
In the early 1920s the Aberdeen Sand Company began work on a 230-acre site near Pinehurst, excavating sand for projects including the Blue Ridge Parkway. Over the years, with nature's helping hand, a unique landscape was created. In 1984 Dan Maples discovered this domain and set to work sculpting it into one of Pinehurst's most memorable golf courses.

Scottie Scheffler: narrowly missed out on matching Nelly Korda’s three-in-three, when he placed second at the Houston Open. This followed back-to-back wins at the Arnold Palmer Invitational and The Players. Like Korda, he remains comfortably ahead in the official world golf rankings.
