Rivers Edge Golf Club

4-star: Above average course - well worth a visit.

Est. 1999

Rivers Edge Golf Club: Look forward to plenty of variety, adventure and challenge on this exciting and, at times, immensely scenic Arnold Palmer designed golf course. Several holes are laid out alongside the wide, stunning expanse of the Shallotte River - as spectacular as you'll find anywhere in the Carolinas.

However, visually impressive can also imply dauntingly tough, and Palmer serves up this element in no small measure. The par-5 9th, for example, is one of the riskiest "go for it in two" par-5s on the planet. After a good drive you can either lay-up or take aim directly at the narrow green, which sits in the middle of the river, connected only by a thin sliver of fairway. Knee-trembling - yes, memorable - absolutely, birdieable - give it a try! The short par-3 5th and long par-3 15th both require tee-shots over the river's marshy inlets, while the closing stretch from the par-4 16th comprises three fabulous riverside holes, full of imagination and as tough as they come - especially if the wind is blowing.

Much of the rest of the layout follows a tree-lined route behind the river, with many undulations creating several blind tee and approach shots. A yardage book is a must on your first outing, particularly with several creeks, ditches, ponds, sandy waste areas and very substantive bunkering along the way.

Maintenance and presentation should be better than it was when we visited. Real estate is also making its presence felt, detracting slightly from the naturalness of the "high drama on the river's edge".
