Travelling north from Myrtle Beach on US Hwy 17, you will cross the border into North Carolina. Continue on Hwy 17 for approx 22 miles. At traffic lights, turn right onto the 211 direction Southport / Bald Head Island. After 12 miles, at traffic lights, turn right into St James Plantation. From gatehouse follow St James Drive for 2.6 miles and turn right into Members Club Blvd. After 1 mile golf clubhouse is on your left.
St James Pltn (Members Club)
St James Plantation (The Members Club): Amongst the excellent array of championship courses at St James Plantation, the Members Club appears to be slightly easier-going and less demanding than the other three. With 18-holes designed by Hale Irwin and nine by Tim Cate, you will usually find generous width fairways, lightly tree-lined and not too onerously bunkered.
On the Hale Irwin course, water comes into the reckoning infrequently, and rarely does it pose a serious threat, except on the very good par-5 15th and long par-3 16th holes. There are some gentle elevation changes as you progress round the Irwin course, especially coming back towards the clubhouse, which occupies slightly higher terrain than the rest of the layout.
The Irwin back-nine has a more natural feel than the front, particularly its earlier holes, where the environment is more tree-lined and undulating and real estate less noticeable. The greens here are not too mounded, nor are they overly large; a good-width fringe lies between the putting surface and the relatively shallow greenside bunkering.
On the Cate-nine, the story regarding hazards is somewhat different. Small ponds and sandy waste areas are rarely out of the picture, as the holes weave their way through real estate.
