St James Plantation (The Reserve Club)

4-PLUS: Must play course - excellent standard; worthy of 4½ stars.

Est. 2006

St James Plantation (The Reserve Club): Jostling the Players Club for top honours at St James Plantation, is the newest and arguably most exciting of the layouts - The Reserve Club. Rather than projecting the classical elegance of the Players Club, this newer arrival juxtaposes the smooth, clean lines of Mike Nicklaus's design, with the often stark beauty of its swampland environment.

Starting out in a very natural and open landscape of pine-filled swamp, each of the holes is characterised by clean and flowing lines, as well as plenty of challenge, especially so on your first outing, and even more so if the wind is blowing. The generally good-width fairways are frequently lined with water hazards, swamp, or sandy waste areas that occasionally shelve away into the ponds. Adding to the visual and at times intimidating spectacle, a fine array of small pot bunkers and larger more sprawling traps, are frequently present. On at least four occasions you'll find bunkers mischievously placed in the middle of the fairways.

Pine forest, rather than swamp, provides the backdrop on the more classical back-nine, where one beautifully sculpted hole follows another. The tree-lined fairways reach their zenith at the par-4 15th, where a fabulous cathedral-like corridor of tall pines stand shoulder to shoulder from tee to green.

This challenging and attractive layout is St James Plantation's most recent addition. It also features some of the best presented playing surfaces of the quartet of courses ... most especially characterised by its fast, seriously sloping and at times very large greens.
