Travelling north from Myrtle Beach on US Hwy 17, you will cross the border into North Carolina. Continue on Hwy 17 for approx 22 miles. At traffic lights, turn right onto the 211 direction Southport / Bald Head Island. After 12 miles, at traffic lights, turn right into St James Plantation. From gatehouse follow St James Drive for 3 miles and turn left into the Founders Club.
St James Pltn (Founders Club)
St James Plantation (Founders Club): this was the first of four excellent championship layouts constructed at St James Plantation, and it's the layout that commands pride of place alongside the impressive marshlands of Beaverdam Creek.
You'll have to wait until the wonderful downhill par-3 16th however, before the marshland views come into sharp focus. The 17th and 18th holes, two testing, water-laden par-4s, make excellent and very challenging use of the marsh. The approach shot into 18 is a real knee-trembler.
The layout's wonderfully scenic finish comes as something of a surprise after playing through an unusually open and nicely undulating front-nine. The highlights of the "outward" half include a huge and monstrously sloping green at the par-3 5th, the short, driveable par-4 6th, and a much tougher and longer par-4 7th. Despite its openness, several of the fairways on this stretch will feel quite tight, especially with the semi-rough possessing clinging, velcro-like tendencies in the summer.
As the back-nine gets underway, it weaves its way a little more closely through real estate, with the presence of bunkering and water appearing to grow and grow. When you hit the closing three-hole stretch, any scrap of short green grass becomes most welcome, but a rather rare sight. If the short stuff isn't much in evidence, then wonderful marshland views are definitely there to enjoy.
