Rock Creek Golf Club

4-star: Above average course - well worth a visit.

Est. 1993

Rock Creek Golf Club: Laid out amongst the woods and wetlands that border Mobile Bay (which is less than a mile away), Rock Creek is a pleasantly undulating, mainly wooded golf course that has won many admirers.

The two nine-hole loops, arranged on either side of the clubhouse, wind their way between good quality housing, with one strongly designed hole following another.

The excellent back-nine, with less real estate in evidence, has some gloriously natural holes, not least on the closing stretch that starts with the wonderful par-3 16th, which demands a downhill carry over wetlands to find the safety of the green. The long and very attractive par-4 17th also hugs the side of the wetland, with danger all around the green in the form of substantive bunkering, in addition to the wetland.

On the front nine, the hole you will surely remember is the par-4 2nd, requiring a well positioned tee shot and then a long carry over a wide patch of wetland to the elevated green. If your second shot should fly too long, there's every chance it might bounce back onto the green off a tall wooden bulkhead that stands behind the green.

Overall, a very well presented and testing golf course, where the real estate blends nicely into the background, allowing you to concentrate on the challenges and demands of Earl Stone's absorbing layout.

Did you know?

Rock Creek is located on the eastern side of Mobile Bay, a large shallow inlet from the Gulf of Mexico. Long occupied by indigenous peoples of the Mississippian culture, a Spanish colony was established here in the mid-1550s.

In the early-1700s French settlers arrived, establishing a deep-sea port at Dauphin Island, and founding the city of Mobile as French Louisiana's capital (which later moved to Biloxi, then New Orleans and finally Baton Rouge).
