Peninsula Golf & Racquet Club

4-star: Above average course - well worth a visit.

Peninsula Golf & Racquet Club: Golfing at Peninsula is always a pleasure, whichever of the three picturesque, natural and scenic nine-hole loops you choose to play. The green-keeping is first-rate, with the Marsh, Lakes and Cypress nines always presented in tip-top condition. Earl Stone's strong layout contains many nicely dog-legging holes, generally good-width fairways and excellent bunkering. Occasionally in the scenic mix is some very unobtrusive real estate, although the big accent here is on live oaks, cypress trees, natural vegetation and more than 30 small lakes, which will need to be negotiated at various points.

The tree-lined perimeter that wraps around this flattish terrain ensures you are adequately sheltered from the main force of any breezes coming off Mobil Bay (on one side) and the Gulf of Mexico's Little Lagoon (on the other). However, this foliage also restricts you to just one impressive sea view over Mobile Bay, which comes briefly at the par-5 7th on the Lakes course. On each nine you will discover many memorable and naturally beautiful holes, often skirted by small lakes or sandy waste areas with tussocky grass. The slightly elevated greens are usually guarded by relatively shallow bunkers, grassy run-off areas, and many enjoy a majestic back-drop of impressively tall pines.

Tournaments

The Masters: The 88th Masters Tournament at Augusta National sees LIV golfer Jon Rahm defend his title against the world’s best. Pressing hard will be world No.1 and 2022 champion Scottie Scheffler and world No.2 Rory McIlroy (April 11-14).

Chevron Championship: the women’s major championship season gets underway for the second year at its new Carlton Woods home outside Houston, Texas. World No.2 Lilia Vu defends (April 18-21).

Who's Who

Nelly Korda: records a perfect start to 2024 with four wins out of her last four appearances on the LPGA Tour, a feat last achieved by Lorena Ochoa in 2008. Korda's win at the T-Mobile Match Play brought up her 12th LPGA Tour victory.

Scottie Scheffler: narrowly missed out on matching Nelly Korda’s three-in-three, when he placed second at the Houston Open. This followed back-to-back wins at the Arnold Palmer Invitational and The Players. Like Korda, he remains comfortably ahead in the official world golf rankings.

Marco Simone Golf & Country Club
