RiverTowne Country Club

4-star: Above average course - well worth a visit.

Est. 2001

RiverTowne Country Club: This relatively recent and very exciting Arnold Palmer design quickly became an LPGA Tour venue, and continues to grow in stature and reputation. Meandering through an almost incidental (but growing) development of high-quality homes, the relatively flat and open marshland terrain has been sculpted into a totally absorbing and very natural golf course. The layout provides many stunning vistas onto the expansive wetlands of Horlbeck Creek, a sizeable tributary of the nearby Wando River.

This is a layout to test and challenge the best. Tussocks of tall, reedy grass help define the generally good-width and pleasantly rolling fairways, but beware the many hazards. Substantive, numerous and sometimes deep bunkers, combine with an array of small lakes, ponds and wetland areas.

Good course management is essential, lest the proliferation of hazards start to overwhelm you (quite possible on a first outing). Around the excellent quality and well-paced greens, and assuming you've avoided the bunkering and water, velcro-like clinging rough may be where your ball comes to rest.

Occasionally the course becomes a bit more tree-lined, particularly the early stages of the back-nine. However, for most of the round the backdrop is relatively open marshland, and the views, especially at the close of each nine are superb.

Pick of the holes: the par-5 9th is one of the toughest, but scenically, one of the best.

Did you know?

RiverTowne Country Club was originally known as Parker's Island. In the early 18th century, the Parker family owned the island. By the turn of the century the Horlbeck family had purchased Parker's Island and converted a small portion of it into a brickyard. The brick from this and other brickyards along the Wando River supplied the conversion of downtown Charleston from wood to brick construction. By acquiring the Parker's Island property in 1999, the Ginn Company set about developing RiverTowne Country Club, and Charleston's first Arnold Palmer Signature golf course. The large plantation style clubhouse, like the golf, is a relatively recent addition to the island.
