Poresia Country Club

3-star: Good course – an enjoyable test for your game.

Est. 1990

Poresia Country Club: Previously a 36-hole facility, the club originally comprised four interchangeable nine-hole loops - Hibiscus, Orchid, Sakura and Bougainvillea. In 2013 the club scaled back to 27-holes, "mothballing" the Hibiscus-nine (which started and finished away from the clubhouse), ahead of housing development. Occupying a former palm oil plantation, the layout now comprises the Orchid, Sakura and Bougainvillea nine-hole loops.

The Orchid course is arguably the best of the remaining three loops at Poresia. Challenging from start to finish, it lays down a tough test for all handicap levels. The 4th (Orchid) is played from the highest point on the Poresia domain, a wonderfully elevated tee-box providing an excellent view of the surrounding plantation, with the long downhill par-4 stretching out in front of you.

On Orchid and Sakura, the terrain is constantly undulating and lightly palm-tree lined (few other tree varieties compete with the ever-present palms). The generally good-width fairways are sometimes flanked by large railway-sleepered bunkers, while beyond the first-cut, deepish grassy rough awaits.

The Sakura course becomes a little tighter in places and less undulating than the Orchid, especially through its middle section. A meandering creek ensures plenty of water hazards lie in wait in Sakura's middle section. A few holes have creeks crossing the fairways twice, setting up some risk-reward opportunities for longer hitters.

Recent reports suggest the course and clubhouse are looking a bit more tired than in their heyday. Several of Dye's trademark railway-sleepered bunkers on Orchid have now been replaced with grass-lined bunkers.

Did you know?

Based on its location in Malaysia and close proximity to Singapore, the name Poresia was created by combining the endings of the words SingaPORE and MalaySIA. In this Japanese owned and managed club, three of the nines are named after national flowers: Hibiscus (Malaysia), Orchid (Singapore) and Sakura (Japan).

Poresia is located within the Leisure Farm domain, a former palm oil plantation, where the development of high-quality, and some high-density housing does not intrude on and cannot be seen from the golf course.

Nelly Korda: records a perfect start to 2024 with four wins out of her last four appearances on the LPGA Tour, a feat last achieved by Lorena Ochoa in 2008. Korda's win at the T-Mobile Match Play brought up her 12th LPGA Tour victory.

Scottie Scheffler: narrowly missed out on matching Nelly Korda’s three-in-three, when he placed second at the Houston Open. This followed back-to-back wins at the Arnold Palmer Invitational and The Players. Like Korda, he remains comfortably ahead in the official world golf rankings.
