Laguna National Golf & Country Club (Classic course)

4-star: Above average course - well worth a visit.

Laguna National Golf & Country Club (World Classic course): Recent developments have produced a seismic transformation at Laguna National. For the travelling golfer, it is no longer a revered but "off-limits" private country club. It can now challenge Singapore's mighty Sentosa ... at least in terms of facilities and accessibility. A large "futuristic" luxury hotel and a David Leadbetter Academy have recently joined Laguna National's two championship layouts ... the "tournament" Masters course and the heavily made-over World Classic course.

The Classic course used to bear a strong family resemblance to its companion Masters layout ... they came from the same Dye Design drawing board. That changed to a dramatic extent when Andy Dye revisited the Classic layout in 2010, and took it to a new level!

The bunkering grew and multiplied, and took on a new and exuberant persona. At times crater-like, at others pyramidal, a plethora of deep pot bunkers, joined forces with huge sandy waste areas, lunar-like mounding and monstrously sloping greens ... visually a jaw-dropping creation ... but a rather unplayable layout.

Since Dye's extravagant revamp, and much to the delight of many members, the Classic course has now been gently toned down. The 2017 revamp of the 2010 revamp has helped to renew its authenticity, soften some of the angles, and enhance overall playability. The routing still includes the need to hit diagonally across a good-width canal (Sungei Bedok) at the 2nd and 3rd holes, while the 9th and 18th still bring you back to the clubhouse alongside a small lake. The 17th remains a very testing island-green par-3.

Proximity to roads and the airport may create some background noise at times, but certainly nothing to detract from enjoying this excellent and dramatic parkland layout.

Tournaments

The Masters: The 88th Masters Tournament at Augusta National sees LIV golfer Jon Rahm defend his title against the world’s best. Pressing hard will be world No.1 and 2022 champion Scottie Scheffler and world No.2 Rory McIlroy (April 11-14).

Chevron Championship: the women’s major championship season gets underway for the second year at its new Carlton Woods home outside Houston, Texas. World No.2 Lilia Vu defends (April 18-21).

Who's Who

Nelly Korda: records a perfect start to 2024 with four wins out of her last four appearances on the LPGA Tour, a feat last achieved by Lorena Ochoa in 2008. Korda's win at the T-Mobile Match Play brought up her 12th LPGA Tour victory.

Scottie Scheffler: narrowly missed out on matching Nelly Korda’s three-in-three, when he placed second at the Houston Open. This followed back-to-back wins at the Arnold Palmer Invitational and The Players. Like Korda, he remains comfortably ahead in the official world golf rankings.
