Newbury & Crookham Golf Club

4-star: Above average course - well worth a visit.

Est. 1873

Newbury & Crookham Golf Club: The golf course at Newbury & Crookham might only measure 5961 yards, but this always challenging and wonderfully undulating layout feels like a course that plays much longer.

Meandering its way from Greenham Common along to the famous Newbury racecourse, the layout roams through a pleasantly varied environment of tree-lined parkland holes on its lower elevations, while more open heathland terrain, complete with occasional heather and gorse, provides the setting for the very scenic higher sections. Included within the par of 69 there are two shortish par-5's and a collection of five very stylish par-3's.

The plunging downhill par-3 3rd, a "wee demon" of a par-3 at the 6th, and the wonderfully bunkered par-3 17th all vie for top honours amongst the club's members. The excellent long, downhill par-4 7th introduces water for the first time, which you can then say goodbye to after crossing a stream that most dangerously straddles the fairway on the uphill par-4 8th.

Greenkeeping here is generally excellent, ensuring a pleasant spring in the fairways and excellent quality greens, many of which are home to tough slopes and borrows. The bunkering is also very well done, with many formidably deep greenside bunkers, high-lipped fairway bunkers and a tricky border of longish shaggy grass around each one.

Although not long by modern standards, Newbury & Crookham is an immensely enjoyable and well presented course, and more than a match if you try to play to your handicap, especially on a first outing.

Did you know?

The current day Newbury & Crookham Golf Club was established in 1946, when the old Crookham Course, dating from 1873, amalgamated with the Newbury District Club, founded in 1923. The Club’s antecedents in the old Crookham club mean that Newbury & Crookham can lay claim to being England's 7th oldest golf club.

The original Crookham course was laid out in 1873, on Greenham Common on the opposite side of Bury's Bank Road to the present layout. Newbury & Crookham’s long links with the past have provided a magnificent display of silverware, two of its trophies dating back to 1874.
