Craigielaw Golf Club

4-star: Above average course - well worth a visit.

Est. 2001

Craigielaw Golf Club is home to a course inspired by the great links courses of Britain, especially those established on land which is less dominated by large sand dunes. Although not overly long at 6600 yards from the back tees, its seaside location and exposure to the wind ensures it is more than capable of challenging golfers, whatever their ability.

As these impressively designed links weave their way across the open, gently undulating terrain, you will be tested by deep greenside and fairway bunkering, as well as classic links-style rough, which lies in wait on either side of the generally good-width fairways. Stone walls, originally built when this land was farmed, lend additional definition to some holes.

One of the best stretches, from the par-4 13th to the long par-4 16th, takes you right through the centre of the course with views up to the impressive, farm-like clubhouse building and down across Kilspindie to the Firth of Forth.

Water hazards are rare on this layout, mainly concentrated on the tough par-5 11th hole, although on several occasions you'll need to be mindful of out-of-bounds. The greens are usually large and undulating, guaranteed to expose any weaknesses in your putting game.

With good maintenance standards throughout and a smattering of real estate affecting only a couple of holes, Craigielaw provides a very pleasant golf outing on yet another of East Lothian's wonderfully scenic golfing treasures.

Did you know?

Craigielaw's club emblem is a hare standing on gently undulating ground; not too surprising when you learn there are something in the region of 40 pairs of brown hares in the neighbourhood.

Craigielaw has hosted several top quality amateur and professional events, including the 2006 Scottish Amateur Championship and final qualifying for the 2007 British Seniors Open. Between Craigielaw and the sea (Firth of Forth) lies Kilspindie Golf Club, a par-69 traditional links style layout, measuring 5500 yards from the men's back tees.

Also in view from Craigielaw is Gullane Hill, with its golf courses Nos. 1, 2 and 3, and to the right of the hill, the pyramid-shaped mound which sits directly behind the town of North Berwick.
