Killarney Country Club

3-PLUS: Good course - several memorable features; worthy of 3½ stars.

Est. 1903

Killarney Country Club: Killarney is another of Johannesburg's golf courses that snakes through the city's northern suburbs, about 3km in length from north to south, but never much more than 200 metres wide. The west side of the course is flanked by quiet residential streets, the east by the somewhat busier and nosier M1 highway.

The front-nine loop, which heads south from the impressive clubhouse, and the back-nine that heads north, are both characterised by pleasantly undulating parkland, through which Robert Trent Jones' very enjoyable design is laid out.

A small creek (a tributary of the Sandspruit) runs through the course, and together with a few small ponds, ensures that water threatens on about half the holes. The 13th, 14th and 15th holes tangle with the widest part of the creek, while both the 9th and 18th finish alongside decorative ponds, which will catch any approach shots hit too far offline.

Many varieties of trees, including some impressively large gum trees, adorn the course; this flora narrowing things down from the tee on several occasions. With many excellent looking golf holes, very good maintenance standards and a challenging RTJ layout, Killarney is a thoroughly enjoyable and absorbing course to play.

Did you know?

Killarney Country Club developed out of the old Transvaal Automobile Club, which was originally formed in 1903 to foster "automobilism". This was its primary function until 1930, when the duties of "protecting, fostering and promoting motoring interests" was passed to The Automobile Association of South Africa.

In 1916 the club moved to Cooke's Farm in Killarney and from there developed its sporting and social facilities. In 1970, as a result of the requirements of the Johannesburg City Council for the North-South Expressway, the club moved to its present location in Houghton.

Just beyond the course boundary to the right of the 5th green you may notice the Consulate General Offices of the Unites States.
