Modderfontein Golf Club

3-PLUS: Good course - several memorable features; worthy of 3½ stars.

Est. 1935

Modderfontein Golf Club: Although originally founded by the Modderfontein Dynamite Factory, there is nothing too explosive about this very pleasant and mature parkland layout. On gently undulating and relatively open terrain the two nine-hole loops contain a good mix of straight and dog-legging holes.

A liberal scattering of trees could play their part in proceedings, especially if you are wayward from the tee; your path to the green may well require some inventive shot-making to go under, over or round the trees. The greens of both the par-5 10th and par-3 11th are testingly guarded by tall, mature trees.

On the very good back-nine loop, water hazards come into the reckoning on almost every hole (except the first two), with a stream running alongside and crossing some fairways.

Many scores will be made or lost at Modderfontein's "Amen Corner", where the stream widens into small ponds, requiring flighted approach shots over water on the long par-4 12th, par-5 13th and good-length par-3 14th. Water also needs to be crossed in front of the 17th and 18th greens, both good length par-4's.

Beyond the course the views are a mix of open country, residential and industrial (the dynamite factory being the world's largest !). Inside the course boundaries, you'll find a thoroughly enjoyable and well-maintained layout, where water, sand, trees and gentle undulations are skilfully fused to test and challenge your overall game - but hopefully not blow it out of the water!
