We-Ko-Pa Golf Club (Saguaro course)

4+ (4 gold): one of our top-rated 4-star courses, worthy of 4½ stars.
We-Ko-Pa Golf Club (Saguaro course) Est. 2006

Where2Golf says:

We-Ko-Pa Golf Club (Saguaro course): Opened five years after We-Ko-Pa's original Cholla course, the Saguaro quickly developed a reputation to match its highly-acclaimed sibling. Both layouts rank with Arizona's very best, and both occupy wonderfully natural Sonoran desert habitat on the Fort McDowell Yavapai Indian Reservation.

Pristine desert and stunning mountain vistas frame the holes on We-Ko-Pa's Saguaro layout (much as they do on the Cholla). Housing and other modern-day intrusions are absent. To enhance your experience of this challenging and immensely scenic layout, Coore & Crenshaw crafted a "walker-friendly" layout. Like the Cholla, the Saguaro roams its way over a large area of pristine desert terrain, but with short green-to-distances, and not too much "unnecessary" elevation change.

Cholla and saguaro cactuses (needless to say) are much in evidence beyond the good-width fairways. Maintenance and presentation standards are always top-class, ensuring that the greens are among the truest that you've putted on. As a 36-hole golf facility, with two fabulous championship courses and an onsite luxury hotel, We-Ko-Pa is right up there with Arizona's best Stay&Play golf venues.

Stay & Play: on-site accommodation is available in the We-Ko-Pa resort hotel (see Where2Stay section below).

Did you know?

Part of the resort destination owned by the Fort McDowell Yavapai Indian Nation, the We-Ko-Pa golf club takes its name from a native Indian word meaning "Four Peaks Mountain". You'll have no difficulty spotting the four peaks from either of the two championship golf courses. Also visible, on the hour, is one of the world's highest water fountains, located in nearby Fountain Hills.

The newest of We-Ko-Pa's two courses is named after the Sonoran desert's most iconic plant, the saguaro cactus. Although transported to many other dry, desert locations around the world, the cactus only grows naturally in the Sonoran desert, which covers parts of Arizona, California and northern Mexico. Pronounced "sah-wahroh", this slow growing plant takes up to 75 years to develop a side arm. The arms increase the plant's reproductive capacity, creating more surface area, flowers and fruit. Saguaros can live for 150 years and more.
