TPC Las Vegas

4-PLUS: Must play course - excellent standard; worthy of 4½ stars.

Est. 1996

TPC Las Vegas, a member of the Tournament Players Club network, was formerly known as TPC at the Canyons. Name change aside, it remains one of the toughest and most spectacular layouts in Las Vegas.

This dramatic layout meanders over several hundred acres of native desert, part of a dry natural river bed. Only a fraction of this rugged tapestry of arroyos (streams) and barrancas (ravines) is irrigated land, providing lush green parcels of manicured fairway.

After a relatively gentle par-4 opener, comes a tough island-green par-3, the putting surface elevated above a dry-stony arroyo that sweeps around on three sides. The same rock-strewn arroyo will account for anything that strays too far left on the par-4 3rd and par-5 4th.

After the many challenges of the anti-clockwise front-nine loop, the equally demanding back-nine rewards you with many fabulous golf holes, and the best views from the course. On several occasions you are faced with good-length carries across a deep and spectacular ravine, while Red Rock Canyon provides a spectacular backdrop in the distance.

Large villas, a JW Marriott hotel and occasional apartment blocks appear around the course's perimeter, but all are set well back, and do not detract from the drama and beauty of the wonderfully sculpted holes, excellent bunkering and ever-present and ever-threatening desert terrain. On your first visit it is well worth taking a caddie, if only to help you on the testing greens, which (we were assured) generally slope away from the mountains and towards The Strip.
