Desert Willow Golf Resort (Mountain View course)

4-PLUS: Must play course - excellent standard; worthy of 4½ stars.

Est. 1998

Desert Willow Golf Resort (Mountain View course): Two wonderfully scenic, challenging and beautifully laid out championship courses await the visiting golfer at Desert Willow. The Firecliff and Mountain View courses, sharing much in common with each other, can stand alongside any of the top-name courses in the Palm Springs/Desert area.

The Mountain View course roams its way over a large expanse of gently undulating desert terrain, with plenty of stylish bunkering built into mounds along the fairways and protecting the small and mischievously sloping greens. Beyond the generally good-width fairways and more clinging first cut of rough, swathes of desert terrain are attractively adorned with all manner of indigenous flowering shrubs and cactus.

A few of the drives will look rather tight, especially on a first outing, with the menacing bunkering, occasional water hazards and large sandy-waste areas clearly in view. Among many excellent golf holes, the very attractive par-4 6th brings water into play for the first time, while palm trees around the green give it a classical palm desert look. The closing par-5 18th is perhaps the most testing hole, with water threatening from the tee, again on the second shot and alongside the front-left edge of the green.

Real estate is scarcely seen from the course, with most of the holes framed by fabulous mountain scenery, and desert vistas closer at hand. As the name implies, mountain views are one of this course's principal attractions; another is the elegance of Hurdzan's layout, deftly complementing its often rugged desert surroundings.

The Masters: The 88th Masters Tournament at Augusta National sees LIV golfer Jon Rahm defend his title against the world’s best. Pressing hard will be world No.1 and 2022 champion Scottie Scheffler and world No.2 Rory McIlroy (April 11-14).

Chevron Championship: the women’s major championship season gets underway for the second year at its new Carlton Woods home outside Houston, Texas. World No.2 Lilia Vu defends (April 18-21).

Who's Who

Nelly Korda: records a perfect start to 2024 with four wins out of her last four appearances on the LPGA Tour, a feat last achieved by Lorena Ochoa in 2008. Korda's win at the T-Mobile Match Play brought up her 12th LPGA Tour victory.

Scottie Scheffler: narrowly missed out on matching Nelly Korda’s three-in-three, when he placed second at the Houston Open. This followed back-to-back wins at the Arnold Palmer Invitational and The Players. Like Korda, he remains comfortably ahead in the official world golf rankings.
