Riverwalk Golf Club

3-PLUS: Good course - several memorable features; worthy of 3½ stars.

Est. 1947

Riverwalk Golf Club: originally known as Mission Valley Country Club, then as Stardust Country Club, this San Diego golf course entertained a myriad of golf's legends while hosting the PGA Tour during the 1950s and 60s. After a substantial redesign by Ted Robinson (father and son), the club was re-launched as Riverwalk Golf Club in 1998 with a much revamped 27-hole layout.

What was once flat terrain, now features undulating fairways, waterfalls and well-protected bentgrass greens. Water comes into play on 13 of the 27 holes with a spectacular waterfall surrounding the green of the signature hole. The San Diego River, which runs directly through the course, is a prominent feature of the layout, contributing to the beauty and challenge of the course.

Did you know?

Host to the San Diego Open on many occasions between 1955 and 1967 (now called the Farmers Insurance Open), the club changed its name in 1962 from Mission Valley Country Club to Stardust Country Club. Rumours have it that Phil Mickelson worked at the Stardust practice range in the mid-1980s collecting-in the balls.

Construction of the "San Diego Trolley" (light railway system) in the 1990s forced a complete redesign of the golf course, which resulted in a new Ted Robinson-designed 27-hole layout, and another renaming, this time to Riverwalk Golf Club. The nines were named Presidio, Mission and Friars.

Tournaments

The Masters: The 88th Masters Tournament at Augusta National sees LIV golfer Jon Rahm defend his title against the world’s best. Pressing hard will be world No.1 and 2022 champion Scottie Scheffler and world No.2 Rory McIlroy (April 11-14).

Chevron Championship: the women’s major championship season gets underway for the second year at its new Carlton Woods home outside Houston, Texas. World No.2 Lilia Vu defends (April 18-21).

Who's Who

Nelly Korda: records a perfect start to 2024 with four wins out of her last four appearances on the LPGA Tour, a feat last achieved by Lorena Ochoa in 2008. Korda's win at the T-Mobile Match Play brought up her 12th LPGA Tour victory.

Scottie Scheffler: narrowly missed out on matching Nelly Korda’s three-in-three, when he placed second at the Houston Open. This followed back-to-back wins at the Arnold Palmer Invitational and The Players. Like Korda, he remains comfortably ahead in the official world golf rankings.

Marco Simone Golf & Country Club

Marco Simone Golf & Country Club: With a clubhouse that might befit a Roman Emperor, and a golf course to match, you can be sure of a memorable outing at Rome's most talked about golf facility.

Jim Fazio's original layout was much changed to create a modern Ryder Cup course ... now one of the Eternal City's (and Italy's) most revered.
