Coyote Creek Golf Club (Valley course)

3-PLUS: Good course - several memorable features; worthy of 3½ stars.

Est. 2001

Coyote Creek Golf Club (Valley course): Nestling down in the picturesque northern section of the Santa Clara valley (also known as Silicon Valley), the excellent golf facilities at Coyote Creek include two championship courses.

Based on an older layout, Nicklaus Design were commissioned to upgrade and re-model the Valley course, which has resulted in an enjoyable layout, easier-going than the Tournament course, but not without its challenges. The more compact Valley course is similar in length to its companion layout, although occupies the flatter terrain of the valley floor, without straying across Highway 101 into the foothills of the Diablo range.

An array of straight and dog-legging holes, some lightly tree-lined, others more open, ensures a nicely varied layout, while good-width fairways are mixed-in with some tighter and more testing tee shots. On several stretches the presence of maturing pine and eucalyptus trees, ensured the continued "tightening-up" of the course as it matured.

There are many fewer creeks to be crossed en route to the greens than on the Tournament course, although the opening and closing back-nine holes both bring the meandering Coyote Creek into play. Water hazards are limited to the par-3 2nd and 16th holes. Not overly large, good-quality and well-bunkered greens are home to many slopes and borrows on which to hone your putting game.

The proximity of Highway 101 inevitably produces some traffic noise, but not to spoil your enjoyment of this well laid out, pleasantly scenic, parkland course.
