Golf de l'Estérel

3-PLUS: Good course - several memorable features; worthy of 3½ stars.

Est. 1989

Golf de l'Estérel: This classic Mediterranean style course is a favourite with golfers holidaying in the Fréjus/Saint-Raphaël area of the Cote D'Azur. Although shorter than current day behemoths at only 5,852 metres (6,400 yds), the tightish, undulating fairways, typically lined with umbrella-pines, demand accuracy from the tee. Good greenside bunkering and water on a third of the holes will also require adept shot-making into the good-sized greens.

Given its overall length, you'll not be surprised to find several short par-4s, while three of the par-3s measure well under 150 metres from the back tees. But length, as most amateur players know, is not everything in golf.

The par-3 2nd, only 118 metres from the tips, demands a carry from tee-to-green over a pond to find the small, well-bunkered green. An absolute gem awaits at the 126-metre par-3 15th. Again water needs to be crossed, this time in the form of a deep silent tree-lined pool. This enchanting hole provides evidence of former quarrying activities in the area.

Although pleasantly tree-lined most of the time, the front-nine makes a tour through the estate's holiday villas, even taking in a shopping centre en route to the 6th tee.

The back-nine is the more interesting, with several good-looking holes, starting with the par-4 10th. This inward nine-hole loop also provides pleasant views onto the forested hills and red rocky peaks of the Massif de l'Esterel.
