5-star: Fabulous – courses don’t get much better than this.

Est. 2007

Monte Rei Golf & Country Club (North course): The masterplan for Monte Rei envisaged two Jack Nicklaus signature designs. The first, Monte Rei North opened in 2007 to great acclaim. It is recognised by many as Portugal's top layout - and one of the very best in Europe. The planned Monte Rei South layout has yet to be built.

Set in the picturesque foothills of the Eastern Algarve, Monte Rei offers sweeping views of the Serra do Caldeirão mountains to the north and the Atlantic Ocean to the south. From the higher elevations Spain and the Guadiana River also get into the picture. Many tee shots are played from commandingly elevated tees.

This classically challenging Nicklaus design, brings water into play on eleven of the eighteen holes. A picturesque mix of native grasses, bushes and trees line the holes, without detracting from the generally open and pleasantly undulating character of the course.

Laid out in two nine-hole loops, the course features an enjoyable series of eight par-4s, five par-3s and five par-5s in a testing and distinctive layout. Each hole is excellently crafted, effortlessly blending into this natural canvas. Good as the front-nine is, it is possibly eclipsed by the greater variety of holes on the back-nine, with the par-4 13th, par-3 14th and water-flanked par-4 15th providing a particularly natural stretch.

Several fairways and greens are bordered by lakes as well as the indigenous flora. The water hazards are complemented by ingeniously shaped and sculpted bunkers. Impressive presentation and attention to detail are clear to see (provided drought conditions in high summer are not impacting the water supply to the course).

The Masters: The 88th Masters Tournament at Augusta National sees LIV golfer Jon Rahm defend his title against the world’s best. Pressing hard will be world No.1 and 2022 champion Scottie Scheffler and world No.2 Rory McIlroy (April 11-14).

Chevron Championship: the women’s major championship season gets underway for the second year at its new Carlton Woods home outside Houston, Texas. World No.2 Lilia Vu defends (April 18-21).

Who's Who

Nelly Korda: records a perfect start to 2024 with four wins out of her last four appearances on the LPGA Tour, a feat last achieved by Lorena Ochoa in 2008. Korda's win at the T-Mobile Match Play brought up her 12th LPGA Tour victory.

Scottie Scheffler: narrowly missed out on matching Nelly Korda’s three-in-three, when he placed second at the Houston Open. This followed back-to-back wins at the Arnold Palmer Invitational and The Players. Like Korda, he remains comfortably ahead in the official world golf rankings.
