Maspalomas Golf

3-PLUS: Good course - several memorable features; worthy of 3½ stars.

Est. 1968

Maspalomas Golf: Located in one of Gran Canaria's most touristic areas, Maspalomas is the second oldest golf course on the island. The arrival in the area of several newer and some would say tougher layouts, has not dented Maspalomas' popularity or reputation as a pleasant and enjoyable parkland venue, which is imbued with its own particular charms and challenges.

Although much of the course is essentially flat, many holes border the dramatically undulating sand hills of the Maspalomas Dunes Nature Reserve. Although the dunes block out any sea views, your journey around the course is accompanied by the ever-present scenic backdrop of the island's rugged peaks and canyons to the north.

The generally good-width, flattish fairways are separated by a variety of palms, delicate pines and several other tree varieties. Beyond them lies a generous margin of sandy waste, from which errant tee shots can usually be found and played. Water only threatens on two occasions; at the very good, slightly dog-legging par-4 15th and again at the short par-3 16th.

The quiet tranquillity of this relatively easy-going layout is not disturbed by the holiday villas and apartments that skirt one or two holes, although occasional squadrons of bright green parrots may provide a squawky commentary to some of your shots.

What ensures that Maspalomas is no parkland push-over, are the firm, fast and very testing greens. Ross's skilful layout and the presence of varying strengths and directions of sea breeze will also make you work for those pars and birdies.
