Golf del Sur

4-star: Above average course - well worth a visit.

Est. 1987

Golf del Sur: Comprising three excellent nine-hole loops, the Links (A-course), North (B-course) and South (C-course), Golf del Sur has matured into a very attractive parkland layout since opening in 1987. Many flowering shrubs and bushes screen out the rugged desert and occasional housing that lies just beyond the course, creating something of a garden-like feel to this ever-undulating and nicely testing layout.

On all three nines, black sand bunkers and a variety of palms, cactus and many other plants and trees create good definition to the holes. Exuberant flowering shrubs also provide many additional splashes of colour. The generally good-width fairways and easy-going grassy rough should inspire confidence from the tee, but beware the occasional "hidden" water hazards that might catch you out.

From the course you will enjoy continual views onto the wide Atlantic Ocean, while inland the craggy peaks and gullies of the island's (inactive) volcanic mountains ensure a spectacular backdrop to many holes. The parkland-style Links course takes you downhill and seaward before looping back up to the clubhouse.

A change of scene awaits on the more open but equally challenging North course, which skirts alongside a rugged and open desert plain. In the foreground you can peer into a deep ravine, while further in the distance the landing strip of Tenerife's South airport can be seen. On both the Links and North courses, the opening hole is played towards a distinctive rock formation (known as montaña roja, or Red Mountain) that boldly juts out into sea.
