Innisbrook Resort & Golf Club (Copperhead course)

5-star: Fabulous – courses don’t get much better than this.

Est. 1972

Innisbrook Resort & Golf Club (Copperhead course): Innisbrook's fabulous foursome, all designed by Larry Packard, is crowned by the wonderfully challenging Copperhead course. This golf leviathan has tested the best on the PGA Tour, every year for many years. It still commands their full respect and requires great shot-making before the winner's trophy can be lifted.

A beautiful opening par-5 sets the scene on the Copperhead. Played from a significantly elevated tee, the well-bunkered rolling fairway doglegs to the right before leading you to a large and sloping green. There is more undulation here than you'll find on most Florida courses. The layout also exudes a more tree-lined parkland feel than is often the case with the Sunshine State's big-name tournament courses. More of a Carolina feel, many would say.

Water puts in a brief but telling appearance on the front-nine, with the fairway of the aptly named par-4 3rd (Narrow Neck) flanked on both sides by good-sized ponds.

You'll see much more water on the flatter back-nine, not least at the Copperhead's infamous "Snake Pit". This tough closing stretch includes the seriously water-defended par-4 16th (Moccasin), the long par-3 17th (Rattler) and long heavily-bunkered uphill par-4 18th (Copperhead).

With almost no real estate in view, the Copperhead has a wonderfully natural persona, which the local population of "diving" ospreys, fox-squirrels and 'gators entertainingly underline. The finishing hole on the Copperhead is a wonderfully testing long uphill par-4, played to a prodigiously bunkered green. A fitting finish to a thoroughly impressive tournament golf course.

Did you know?

Innisbrook's Copperhead course has staged many top-level competitions, including the PGA Tour's Valspar Championship (originally the Tampa Bay Classic). (See our Tournaments section >by Venue >Innisbrook Resort).

Copperhead is named after a North American viper (agkistrodon contortrix), which also goes by the names of death adder or mocassin snake. The tough closing stretch (16, 17 and 18) on Innisbrook's Copperhead course is infamously named the "Snake Pit".

Innisbrook is a member of the Grand Golf Resorts of Florida collection, which is owned by Salamander Hotels & Resorts. Salamander was founded by Sheila C. Johnson, an entrepreneur and philanthropist whose accomplishments span the areas of hospitality, sports, TV/film, the arts, education, women’s empowerment and community development. Ms. Johnson became the first female African-American billionaire.

Published ranking

Copperhead course:
Florida's 37th best course (Golf Digest, 2023/24).
