LPGA International (Hills course)

4-PLUS: Must play course - excellent standard; worthy of 4½ stars.

Est. 1997

LPGA International (Hills course): Located just outside Daytona Beach, one of Florida's busiest holiday and attraction destinations, LPGA International is home to two excellent and contrasting championship golf courses - the Jones and the Hills.

The more open and forgiving character of the Jones course (formerly called the Champions) might appeal to big-hitting fans of links golf. The Hills course (formerly called the Legends), on the other hand, will fully test your game in a classically Floridian wetland and pine forested environment.

Elegantly and challengingly laid out by Arthur Hills, and with barely any housing along the way, the Hills course takes you on a wonderful journey into the natural forest. The relatively flat, good-width fairways are often flanked by small lakes and wetland areas.

Attractive mounding and excellent bunkering also underscore the need for accuracy and good course management. A strategy based around power and length may come asunder in the dense foliage and/or water that lines most of the holes.

On the front-nine a stunning trio commences with the par-4 6th, which tightly hugs a small lake. Next up is a good-length par-3 over wetlands, which leads onto the stunning lakeside par-5 8th. The back-nine loop also has its fair share of excellence. Perhaps the par-3 15th, played to a backdrop of tall pine trees with an attractive lake on your right, steals the show.

In its delightfully natural setting of lakes, wetlands and pine forest, this top-quality golf course is both a joy and a challenge to play - no matter how many times you play it!
