Guavaberry Resort & Country Club

4-star: Above average course - well worth a visit.

Est. 2002

Guavaberry Resort & Country Club: Potentially Guavaberry is one of the best inland golf courses in the Dominican Republic. The excellent and challenging Gary Player design, weaves its way in two nine-hole loops through a natural environment of palm trees and native bushes, where housing has yet to take hold. At times wonderfully undulating, at others flatter, there are many holes to thrill and delight. One or two extravagant water features have been incorporated into the layout, not least a sizable waterfall and cascading stream that protects the greens (left and right) at the spectacular, double-green par-3 13th. The rock-lined, island-green par-3 15th is another memorable hole - the final member of a fabulously varied collection of par-3s. The good-width, nicely rolling fairways create a relatively open feel to the layout, but don't stray too far from the lightish rough, beyond which much thicker, ball-swallowing vegetation awaits. Gauvaberry's new owners are intent on reversing a period of neglect and poor green-keeping, which has held Guavaberry back in recent years. But don't let talk of less than perfect maintenance standards put you off coming to this great layout, which remains one of the island's most natural and interesting golf courses.

Did you know?

The guavaberry or rumberry, not to be confused with the guava fruit, is a tree which grows in the Caribbean, especially in the eastern islands. Guavaberry trees can grow up to 60 ft high, producing an orange-red fruit, which is about half the size of a cherry. Guavaberries are a popular ingredient in jams and drinks, and are also used to flavour rum, producing Guavaberry liqueur.

The Masters: The 88th Masters Tournament at Augusta National sees LIV golfer Jon Rahm defend his title against the world’s best. Pressing hard will be world No.1 and 2022 champion Scottie Scheffler and world No.2 Rory McIlroy (April 11-14).

Chevron Championship: the women’s major championship season gets underway for the second year at its new Carlton Woods home outside Houston, Texas. World No.2 Lilia Vu defends (April 18-21).

Who's Who

Nelly Korda: records a perfect start to 2024 with four wins out of her last four appearances on the LPGA Tour, a feat last achieved by Lorena Ochoa in 2008. Korda's win at the T-Mobile Match Play brought up her 12th LPGA Tour victory.

Scottie Scheffler: narrowly missed out on matching Nelly Korda’s three-in-three, when he placed second at the Houston Open. This followed back-to-back wins at the Arnold Palmer Invitational and The Players. Like Korda, he remains comfortably ahead in the official world golf rankings.
