Sandy Lane (Green Monkey course)

5-star: Fabulous – courses don’t get much better than this.

Est. 2005

Sandy Lane (Green Monkey course): Sandy Lane, one of the Caribbean's premier luxury resorts, offers 45-holes of golf, spread across its three courses. The Tom Fazio designed Green Monkey layout provides a "once in a lifetime" golfing experience, which is available to its members and resort guests. It is complemented by the nine-hole Old Nine, and 18-hole Country Club course, another Tom Fazio-design, which is open to outside visitors.

Lying to the south of Molyneux Road, and 2km inland from the beachfront and Sandy Lane hotel, the Green Monkey is a championship golf course that ranks with the world's best. Here you will find one of the Caribbean's most admired open parkland layouts, with an outstanding array of excellently crafted and challenging holes. Carved from an old limestone quarry, the exposed rock faces contrast dramatically with the lush, rolling green of the fairways. The course also offers dramatic elevation changes.

Pick of the holes: the 16th is one of many stunning holes on the course. This long par-3 (226 yards from the tips) plays downhill to a well-bunker defended green, one of the sand traps adorned with the course's namesake. The backdrop of towering quarry walls, and a small lake to be cleared in front of the green, gives this hole its revered reputation.

Stay&Play at Sandy Lane: If you want to include the Green Monkey on your Caribbean golfing itinerary, you'll need to book into the luxurious Sandy Lane resort (2 km from golf).

Did you know?

Named after the Bajan green monkeys (also known as vervets) that inhabit the island of Barbados, the eponymous golf course spans across 22 acres of the Platinum Coast’s most beautiful terrain.

Golf at Sandy Lane dates back to 1961 when its first 18-hole course opened. The remains of this layout are now found in the resort's nine-hole "Old Nine".

The resort took a huge leap forward in the late-1990s, when new Irish owners J.P. McManus, Dermot Desmond and John Magnier commissioned golf course architect Tom Fazio to design the Country Club course (2002) and Green Monkey course (2005).

Published ranking

Barbados's No.1 golf course (Golf Digest, 2022).
