Kooyonga Golf Club

4-PLUS: Must play course - excellent standard; worthy of 4½ stars.

Est. 1922

Kooyonga Golf Club: Located just north of Adelaide Airport (though relatively undisturbed by arriving or departing air traffic), this excellently maintained and attractive Adelaide sandbelt course occupies nicely undulating terrain. The layout still follows the original Cargie Rymill routing, with an excellent variety of doglegging and straightaway holes.

Pleasant though never overly dense rows of trees and areas of long penal grass separate the rolling fairways. A few tightish drives are mixed in with others of a more forgiving nature. Excellent quality bunkering poses a fairway and greenside threat, but water hazards are not something you'll need to worry too much about here.

The greens are relatively small and firm, but also considerably undulating, with slick run-off areas where bunkering is not present.

The two gently doglegging opening par-5 holes should ease any rustiness in your swing, just in time to take on the ferociously bunkered par-3 3rd. As on many holes, the bunkers are cut right up to the very edge of the putting surface. Some pleasant views and nicely elevated tee-boxes are to be found at the course's higher elevations.

A handsomely crafted, always undulating layout, full of character and golfing challenges, with a large, stylish, modern clubhouse. Housing may surround the outer perimeter of this plot, but is rarely in view or in range.

Did you know?

The name Kooyonga comes from its original owner/designer, Cargie Rymill, whose beachfront home was also called Kooyonga, a misinterpretation of an aboriginal word that he understood to mean "plenty sand, plenty water."

The Clubhouse dates back to 1924, and was built on ground where an old farmhouse named Surrey House once stood. Kooyonga has hosted scores of top level competitions including five Australian Open Championships and three Australian Amateur Championships.

Tournaments

The Masters: The 88th Masters Tournament at Augusta National sees LIV golfer Jon Rahm defend his title against the world’s best. Pressing hard will be world No.1 and 2022 champion Scottie Scheffler and world No.2 Rory McIlroy (April 11-14).

Chevron Championship: the women’s major championship season gets underway for the second year at its new Carlton Woods home outside Houston, Texas. World No.2 Lilia Vu defends (April 18-21).

Who's Who

Nelly Korda: records a perfect start to 2024 with five wins out of her last five starts on the LPGA Tour. Winning the Chevron Championship also brought the second major championship win of her career.

Scottie Scheffler: narrowly missed out on matching Nelly Korda's five wins in five starts, when he placed second at the Houston Open. Either side of that, he won The Arnold Palmer, The Players, and then The Masters and The Heritage.

Marco Simone Golf & Country Club

Marco Simone Golf & Country Club: With a clubhouse that might befit a Roman Emperor, and a golf course to match, you can be sure of a memorable outing at Rome's most talked about golf facility.

Jim Fazio's original layout was much changed to create a modern Ryder Cup course ... now one of the Eternal City's (and Italy's) most revered.
