West Lakes Golf Club

3-PLUS: Good course - several memorable features; worthy of 3½ stars.

Est. 1951

West Lakes Golf Club: Originally called Riverside Golf Club, West Lakes is located just a kilometre or so north from its Adelaide sandbelt neighbours, Royal Adelaide and The Grange.

The golf course at Riverside offers another enjoyable and challenging round played in a partly open, partly tree-lined parkland environment. The course's sandy subsoil ensures plenty of firm, fast-running fairways, as well as stylish, sharp-edged bunkering that is variously found at the front, back and sides of the greens.

The mix of straightaway and doglegging holes are never overly wide, and will require accurate driving, otherwise you'll be playing recovery shots from under the trees or adjoining fairways.

A liberal scattering of round-topped maritime pines, tall eucalyptus and several other tree varieties provide the holes with good definition. Although not characterised by significant elevation changes, West Lakes is not without its dips and hollows, rolling mounds and small hillocks, which add interest to several holes.

Pick of the holes: the par-4 14th gives you plenty to think about, with water making a rare appearance as the fairway bends round into a slightly elevated green. The same small pond also threatens at the snaking par-5 9th, which makes a sharp right turn as you approach the heavily bunker and tree defended green.

Did you know?

West Lakes Golf Club (until 2010 known as Riverside GC) emanated from the Woodville Gardens GC, which was established in 1934 but was forced from its location due to the post-war building boom in the late 1940s.

The course at West Lakes (then named Riverside) wasn't created until 1951 when the present site was turned from wasteland to the beginnings of the course played on today.

Tournaments

The Masters: The 88th Masters Tournament at Augusta National sees LIV golfer Jon Rahm defend his title against the world’s best. Pressing hard will be world No.1 and 2022 champion Scottie Scheffler and world No.2 Rory McIlroy (April 11-14).

Chevron Championship: the women’s major championship season gets underway for the second year at its new Carlton Woods home outside Houston, Texas. World No.2 Lilia Vu defends (April 18-21).

Who's Who

Nelly Korda: records a perfect start to 2024 with four wins out of her last four appearances on the LPGA Tour, a feat last achieved by Lorena Ochoa in 2008. Korda's win at the T-Mobile Match Play brought up her 12th LPGA Tour victory.

Scottie Scheffler: narrowly missed out on matching Nelly Korda’s three-in-three, when he placed second at the Houston Open. This followed back-to-back wins at the Arnold Palmer Invitational and The Players. Like Korda, he remains comfortably ahead in the official world golf rankings.

Marco Simone Golf & Country Club

Marco Simone Golf & Country Club: With a clubhouse that might befit a Roman Emperor, and a golf course to match, you can be sure of a memorable outing at Rome's most talked about golf facility.
