The Federal Golf Club

4-star: Above average course - well worth a visit.

Est. 1946

The Federal Golf Club: Located in the south of Canberra, the Federal provides a wonderfully quiet, natural and scenic golf outing. Occupying undulating and nicely wooded terrain just below the ridge of Redhill, the course has recently been lifted to a new level with the recent addition of installed tees, greens, fairways and a good sized water hazard.

This stone-lined pond immediately comes into play on the downhill, par-5 opening hole. On this undulating layout, the well-spaced holes provide plenty of golfing challenges.

The two nine-hole loops include an excellent variety of straightaway and dog-legging holes, with plenty of rolling elevation changes and lined by an attractive, but not overly dense, array of tall eucalyptus trees. You'll generally have good-width fairways to aim at, but approaches into the greens will need to avoid plenty of stylish bunkering.

From the course you'll enjoy wonderfully scenic views out onto the hills around Canberra and the more distant Brindabella mountain range. Canberra's Black Mountain Tower (formerly Telstra Tower) also puts in one or two appearances. Kookaburras and cockatoos are among the birdlife attractions here, while kangaroos also enjoy the splendid natural habitat alongside the golfers.

Did you know?

Canberra is the capital city of Australia, home to the country's federal government and Australia's largest inland city and eighth largest overall. It was selected as the location for the nation's capital in 1908, following the establishment of the Commonwealth of Australia in 1901.

Canberra was a compromise solution between rivals Sydney (280 km to the north-east) and Melbourne (660 km to the southwest). It is an entirely planned city, with construction commencing in 1913. The federal government moved there in 1927 from its temporary (1901-1927) home in Melbourne.
