Royal Hobart Golf Club

4-star: Above average course - well worth a visit.

Est. 1896

Royal Hobart Golf Club: Located at Seven Mile Beach, about 15 km east of Tasmania's capital, Royal Hobart is a traditional, attractively presented, parkland course, certainly deserving of its Royal status.

The predominantly doglegging front-nine holes and straightaway back-nine holes are laid out on relatively flat, lightly contoured terrain. The uniformly challenging fairways, never too wide, are lined with a wonderful variety of both indigenous and imported trees, providing clear definition to each hole. Good quality bunkering plays its part along the fairways and especially around the greens.

None of the excellent collection of par-3s bring water into play, but all are stylishly bunkered, and the par-3 15th, at 200 metres from the back-tees is quite a challenge. Putting on the subtly sloping, excellent quality greens adds to the pleasures of a round at Royal Hobart.

With predominantly woodland around the course perimeter and very little housing to be seen, you are assured a quiet and natural setting here at Royal Hobart. Although scenically there's not too much to look at beyond the course, a pudding-shaped hill behind the clubhouse provides an interesting backdrop to the gently doglegging par-4 18th.

Did you know?

Royal Hobart was established in 1896, and was originally called Newlands Golf Club. The club changed its name to Hobart Golf Club soon after, with the members playing on a course in the Sandy Bay area. In 1915 the club moved to a new location at Rosny, on Hobart's eastern shore. The club's final move to its current Seven Mile Beach site, came in 1956.

Royal Hobart is one of eight golf clubs in Australia honoured by exercise of the Sovereign's royal prerogative. George V conferred the Royal title on the club in 1925. The eight Australian 'Royals' are (in order of gaining Royal status): Melbourne, Sydney, Queensland, Adelaide, Hobart, Fremantle, Canberra and Perth.

The Club has hosted many top level tournaments, including the 1971 Australian Open, won by Jack Nicklaus. For more details see Top Golf Tournaments at Royal Hobart GC.
