Palmer Coolum Resort

4-star: Above average course - well worth a visit.

Est. 1988

Palmer Coolum Resort, located on the scenic Sunshine Coast north of Brisbane, boasts one of Australia's finest and usually best maintained resort golf courses. Robert Trent Jones Jr's wonderful layout has plenty to keep you thoroughly tested and absorbed, from the dangerously water-protected opening par-5 1st to the equally challenging and also watery par-4 18th.

The layout combines a mix of flattish and more undulating holes, playing out-and-back from the clubhouse in two nine-hole loops. Bordered by natural bushland, tropical rain forest and on rare occasions a small amount of housing, some of the toughest challenges come where ponds and small lakes tightly flank the generally good-width fairways.

With more elevation change on the back-nine, several vantage points give views onto Mount Coolum, a large pudding-bowl hill just beyond the southern end of the course. Seemingly within touching distance, Mount Coolum is nicely mimicked by a pudding-bowl green at the short par-4 16th, to which the Mount provides a wonderful backdrop.

Although the Pacific Ocean shoreline is at times just 500 metres away, the resort's excellent quality golf course doesn't quite get you high enough to offer any sea views. However, it does offer many fabulous and testing golf holes, laid out in a predominantly natural environment that plays home to a wonderful assortment of wildlife (kangaroos included).

Once one of Australia's leading Stay&Play resorts, the onsite luxury accommodation facilities were shut down in 2015 by the resort's owner Clive Palmer. Although the accommodations have yet to reopen (as of early-2024), the golf course has remained open for play throughout.

In its heyday, the Coolum Resort was home to the Australian PGA Championship, from 2002 until 2012. The tournament is one of three Australian "major" championships, and was first played in 1905. (See our Tournaments section >by Venue >Coolum Resort).

From 2007, five new holes (numbers 1 through 5 in the current layout) replaced an original five holes that were played as holes 4 though 8 in the old layout. These former holes were located in woodland closer to the ocean, on the other side of Highway 6 (David Low Way).
