Golf Club at The Rise

4-PLUS: Must play course - excellent standard; worthy of 4½ stars.

Est. 2008

The Rise is an immensely scenic and top-quality Okanagan Valley golf course. It is also something of an understatement for the climb up from Vernon that gets you here. Perched 1,000 feet above Okanagan Lake you will discover a handsomely designed golf course that comes with lake and mountain views to die for.

This big dimension roaming layout is a product of Fred Couples ten-year design partnership with golf course architect Gene Bates. Occupying a wonderfully quiet environment, the holes traverse natural sage-brush covered hills. Putting to one side the spectacular scenery, you'll need to concentrate on hitting fairways with plenty of elevation change, while staying out of the fescues, sagebrush and small trees that flank the holes. There's also no shortage of stylish bunkering.

Starting out with a tremendously scenic downhill par-5 and then two challenging uphill par-4s, you'll begin to appreciate this is no ordinary golf course. There are some blind shots to be made and, on at least six holes, water hazards to be navigated around or over. If your golf game isn't "on song", just a moment admiring the lake and mountain views should quickly restore some harmony to your emotional state.

MOST MEMORABLE HOLES: Scenically there are few holes that are not memorable. The back-tee of the par-4 15th serves up a jaw-dropping Okanagan Lake panorama, while in front of you lies a wonderfully challenging par-4, played to a water defended green. The plunging par-4 17th also fits this description, although without water in play. Sandwiched between these fabulous par-4s is the 176 yard par-3 16th, demanding a full carry over water to a narrow angular green.
