Kananaskis Country Golf Course (Mount Lorette course)

4-star: Above average course - well worth a visit.

Est. 1983

Kananaskis Country Golf Course (Mount Lorette course): Nowhere in Canada will you find such a stunningly natural setting for two highly-acclaimed 18-hole championship golf courses. Here on the banks of the Kananaskis River, with the Kananaskis mountain range towering above, you'll enjoy spectacular scenery with not a house or road in sight. You'll also enjoy the relatively recent renovation of both courses, following serious flood damage and closure from 2013 thru' 2016.

Taking their names from two of the area's most prominent mountain peaks, the Mount Kidd and Mount Lorette courses were both crafted by Robert Trent Jones Sr. Both are laid out in two nine-hole loops radiating out from the clubhouse.

Laid out on relatively flat, easily walkable terrain, the Mount Lorette layout incorporates an excellent mix of holes. Many of the good-width holes are played through avenues of tall pines. Others occupy more open terrain, often flanked by water.

Spectacular mountain vistas provide visual inspiration for the solid and stylishly bunkered front-nine. On the more varied back-nine, the closing five holes are played alongside or occasionally over the fast-running Kananaskis River. At the par-3 15th the ice cold waters sweep in front of the green. They'll need to be crossed again with your tee-shot at the par-4 16th.

The final river crossing comes at the very picturesque par-3 17th, where the pebble and rock-lined river once again cuts in front of the green. At the long par-4 18th your final target is a huge double-green, shared with the 9th hole of the otherwise quite separate Mount Kidd course.

If you are in the Calgary-Banff area, don't hesitate to book-in for the day at Kananaskis, making sure you have time to play both Mount Kidd and Mount Lorette. Each is as wonderful to play as the other.

Did you know?

The backdrop for Kananaskis Country Golf Course is provided by the spectacular Kananaskis range of the central Canadian Rockies. Two of the range's most prominent mountains, Mount Kidd (9705 ft / 2958 m) and Mount Lorette (8157 ft / 2487 m), start their upward journeys alongside the golf courses, providing ever-present mountain vistas as you play your way round.

The Kananaskis River, which flanks several holes on both layouts, flows north for another 40 km or so, before joining into the Bow River at Seebe. Located just east of the small community of Kananaskis, Seebe is a former Calgary Power Company employee township, which in fact no longer exists - despite what the road signs would have you believe.
