The Samoset Resort

4-PLUS: Must play course - excellent standard; worthy of 4½ stars.

Est. 1902

Samoset Resort is home to a championship golf course that ranks with some of the best in Maine. The layout features spectacular views of Penobscot Bay, with a raft of holes played directly alongside the water's edge. The tree-lined and open parkland layout provides a wonderful test for your all-round game, with many attractive, skilfully crafted and challenging holes to enjoy.

The course was originally designed as a 9-hole layout in 1902, and then rebuilt as an 18-hole course by Robert Elder in 1974. In the early 1990s, Jeffrey Cornish improved many of the holes including 10, 11 and 18. In 2000, Maine architect Bradley Booth was instrumental in redesigning and rebuilding holes 4, 5, 14 and 18, and the introduction of the practice area.

Did you know?

For over a century, The Samoset Resort has been considered the premier coastal resort location in Maine, renowned for spectacular and expansive views of Penobscot Bay and distant islands. From the hotel, the soft Camden Hills rise to the east, and the spacious grounds of Jameson Point lie to the west.

The resort originally opened as the Bay Point Hotel in 1889, the vision of Francis Cobb II, a well-known entrepreneur of the day. The Bay Point was sold in 1902 to the Ricker family, who developed the property into a grand resort hotel. Hiram Ricker renamed the hotel "The Samoset," after the Pemaquid Chief on the Maine Coast, who was among the first people to greet the Mayflower Pilgrims.

Tournaments

The Masters: The 88th Masters Tournament at Augusta National sees LIV golfer Jon Rahm defend his title against the world’s best. Pressing hard will be world No.1 and 2022 champion Scottie Scheffler and world No.2 Rory McIlroy (April 11-14).

Chevron Championship: the women’s major championship season gets underway for the second year at its new Carlton Woods home outside Houston, Texas. World No.2 Lilia Vu defends (April 18-21).

Who's Who

Nelly Korda: records a perfect start to 2024 with four wins out of her last four appearances on the LPGA Tour, a feat last achieved by Lorena Ochoa in 2008. Korda's win at the T-Mobile Match Play brought up her 12th LPGA Tour victory.

Scottie Scheffler: narrowly missed out on matching Nelly Korda’s three-in-three, when he placed second at the Houston Open. This followed back-to-back wins at the Arnold Palmer Invitational and The Players. Like Korda, he remains comfortably ahead in the official world golf rankings.

Marco Simone Golf & Country Club

Marco Simone Golf & Country Club: With a clubhouse that might befit a Roman Emperor, and a golf course to match, you can be sure of a memorable outing at Rome's most talked about golf facility.

Jim Fazio's original layout was much changed to create a modern Ryder Cup course ... now one of the Eternal City's (and Italy's) most revered.
