Wintergreen Resort (Devils Knob course)

4-star: Above average course - well worth a visit.

Est. 1976

At the Wintergreen Resort in the famous Blue Ridge Mountains of Virginia, you'll find two very contrasting 18-hole championship courses. Accessible to resort guests, the Devils Knob layout sits atop a mountain of the same name. 12 miles down the mountain, at a much lower altitude, is the year-round Stoney Creek course, which boasts 27-holes playable on a daily fee basis.

The tree-lined Devils Knob course lays down an excellent test, especially in terms of straight-hitting from the tee. You will be treated to one or two spectacular lookouts on your way round, but for most of the time the quite tightly tree-lined fairways will command your attention. Water hazards feature rarely, while sand traps also shouldn't pose too great a threat.

This cart-compulsory undulating layout contains many attractive features and several excellent holes to enjoy. The well-crafted, although always tightish layout offers an array of straightaway and gently doglegging holes, with one or two sharper doglegs also in the mix. Keeping the ball "on the short stuff" and out of the trees is certainly your main challenge, while enjoying the tranquil splendour of the surrounding forest provides your main distraction.

Did you know?

The Devils Knob golf course sits atop a mountain of that name, one of many wooded peaks found in the Blue Ridge Mountains. At 3,845 feet above sea level, Devils Knob is the highest golf course in the state of Virginia. One or two holes on the course offer spectacular views of the Shenandoah and Rockfish valleys. Sitting just below the mountain to the west is the famed Blue Ridge Parkway.

Tournaments

The Masters: The 88th Masters Tournament at Augusta National sees LIV golfer Jon Rahm defend his title against the world’s best. Pressing hard will be world No.1 and 2022 champion Scottie Scheffler and world No.2 Rory McIlroy (April 11-14).

Chevron Championship: the women’s major championship season gets underway for the second year at its new Carlton Woods home outside Houston, Texas. World No.2 Lilia Vu defends (April 18-21).

Who's Who

Nelly Korda: records a perfect start to 2024 with four wins out of her last four appearances on the LPGA Tour, a feat last achieved by Lorena Ochoa in 2008. Korda's win at the T-Mobile Match Play brought up her 12th LPGA Tour victory.

Scottie Scheffler: narrowly missed out on matching Nelly Korda’s three-in-three, when he placed second at the Houston Open. This followed back-to-back wins at the Arnold Palmer Invitational and The Players. Like Korda, he remains comfortably ahead in the official world golf rankings.

Marco Simone Golf & Country Club

Marco Simone Golf & Country Club: With a clubhouse that might befit a Roman Emperor, and a golf course to match, you can be sure of a memorable outing at Rome's most talked about golf facility.

Jim Fazio's original layout was much changed to create a modern Ryder Cup course ... now one of the Eternal City's (and Italy's) most revered.
