Oporto Golf Club

3-PLUS: Good course - several memorable features; worthy of 3½ stars.

Est. 1890

Oporto Golf Club is home to one of continental Europe's oldest golf courses and one of Portugal's most revered clubs. Located just 20 km south of the famed city of Porto (also known as "o Porto"), this sand-based seaside links course includes many attractive holes and features.

You'll not get too many views of the nearby Atlantic Ocean as you journey round the two nine-hole loops, but there's plenty to keep you absorbed and challenged in these traditional links. Relatively narrow fairways, solid bunkering and not overly large greens are a constant.

Water doesn't play too big a part in proceedings until the final quartet of holes. The par-4 15th and 17th, par-3 16th and par-5 18th are all stoutly defended by a variety of water ditches and small ponds.

Did you know?

Oporto GC was founded in 1890 by 24 Englishmen living in the city of "o Porto" ("the Porto"), which lies on the estuary of the famous Douro River. Several of the original members were connected to the port wine trade that has flourished between Portugal and Britain for at least seven centuries. A by-product of this trade, is that English is widely spoken as a second language in Porto and surrounds.

The golf club was originally known as the Porto Niblicks, a name taken from the original lofted sand irons, and evidence of the the sandy terrain on which the course is laid out.

Oporto GC is home to the fourth oldest golf course in continental Europe. France is home to the three oldest: Pau (1856), Dinard (1887) and Biarritz-Le Phare (1888). Royal Antwerp (1888) and Ugolino Firenze (1889) are also older than Oporto, but both had to relocate from their original locations.
