Royal Malta Golf Club

3-PLUS: Good course - several memorable features; worthy of 3½ stars.

Est. 1888

Royal Malta Golf Club, also known as "Marsa", is home to a par-68 course, the only golf course on the three neighbouring islands of Malta, Gozo and Comino. The club moved from Valletta out to its present site in 1904.

The layout offers a good challenge for the more experienced golfer, without being unkind to the novice. The apparent simplicity of the course is deceptive. Its narrow fairways demand accuracy off the tee, while controlled approach shots are needed into the relatively small, bunker-defended greens.

Depending on the season, there is not too much water on the course (in keeping with Malta itself), but there are a few strategically placed water ditches to look out for.

Did you know?

Royal Malta Golf Club was founded in 1888 by Lieutenant-General Sir Henry D’Oyley Torrens. The club was founded by Torrens within a month of his arrival in Malta as the British Governor and Commander-in-Chief, his final posting. Three years earlier Torrens had been the Governor of the Cape Colony in South Africa, where he founded the Royal Cape Golf Club.

Royal Malta, the only golf course on the island, is one of over 65 golf clubs around the world that received its 'Royal' prefix from a British monarch. The Royal title was conferred on the club in its founding year (1888) by Queen Victoria, following the patronage of her son Alfred, Duke of Edinburgh. At the time, Prince Alfred was based in Malta as Commander of the Mediterranean Fleet and became one of the founder members of the club.
