Mount Compass Golf Course

4-star: Above average course - well worth a visit.

Est. 1995

Mount Compass Golf course (known as Fleurieu Golf Course until 2017) is located in the heart of South Australia's Fleurieu Peninsula. Modelled on the open links-style courses of Britain and Ireland, the course offers a challenge to golfers of all levels.

This "sandbelt-style" layout nestles in gently undulating terrain, surrounded by predominantly natural bush. The course is peppered with gorse bushes, 89 threatening bunkers, both large and small, and a few integrated water features.

Several families of kangaroos live in the scrub surrounding the course .... silent observers of your golfing prowess. The limited number of greenkeeping staff do a good job in maintaining and presenting the course, and clearly take pride in the usually excellent greens.

Pick of the holes: the good-length par-3 12th requires a mid to long iron depending on the pin position. Leak your tee shot to the right and water awaits. The target line is between the rear bunkers to find the testing green, which has a large undulation running through it.

Did you know?

Mt Compass Golf Course is located at the beginning of the Fleurieu Peninsula, which juts out towards Kangaroo Island and the Great Australian Bight. The peninsula was named after Charles Pierre Claret de Fleurieu, a French aristocrat, explorer and hydrographer.

The town of Mt Compass has been a hub for the area's sand-mining industry for decades. In the early-1990s, a sand mining company, owned by Alan Bennetts, decided to turn some of its mined land into a golf course. It is no surprise therefore, that the golf course lies on a large tract of easy-draining sandy terrain.
